Cycling shone again on September 23rd, when Gran Premio Varignana 2023, national cycling race for Elite and Under 23s, was held on the fascinating streets of Castel San Pietro Terme.
This edition, anchored in the national cycling tradition, reserves a peculiarity: the Trophy now celebrates the memory of Valter Golfieri.
The sporting event was born in 2021 by the will of a group of enthusiasts with desire to carry on the tradition of Varignana Cup, which would have celebrated a grandiose seventieth anniversary this year.

From the local heart to the global stage
Anchoring the race to the territory, the trio of organizers, who know the streets like the back of their hands, managed the event: Cablotech Biotraining Cycling Team, the home team, together with Polisportiva Villa Fontana and Sergio Dal Fiume 1952, put their passion and knowledge of the territory into play.
The athletes faced the now well-known route of approximately 137km: a first lap in Osteria Grande, five laps immersed in beauty, then the curves of Castel San Pietro, and finally the decisive four laps in Varignana, where every pedal stroke brings you closer to glory. The scene was enriched with the presence of international athletes with two hundred registered at the start representing thirty-five teams, including three foreign ones: the English of the Zappi Racing Team, the Swiss of Vc Mendrisio and the French of AG2R Citroen.

The race, the victory, the tribute to Valter Golfieri
Punctual like a Swiss watch, at 12.00 the presentation of the teams kicked off the event, culminating with the departure at 1.25 pm from the square of the Cablotech factory in Osteria Grande, in homage to the vision of the late patron Valter Golfieri, who always supported and wanted this rebirth of the Grand Prix.
And among the most touching moments, the awards ceremony in the Cablotech square, enriched by the presence of the Mayor, Mr. Tinti, and of the Golfieri family, where Valter’s immutable passion for cycling and his deep connection with the territory were commemorated.
The applause is reserved for Thomas Pesenti of Beltrami TSA Tre Colli, who, after a second place last year, this year climbed onto the top step of the podium. Followed by a French talent, Joris Chaussinand of AG2R Citroen and the determined Luca Cavallo of Overall Tre Colli.
